About VA

Volunteer Action is a local charity with a simple mission: “Volunteering to help local people in need.”

Founded in 1995, VA has grown steadily and now supports communities across East Northants North Place — from Thrapston in the south (A14 boundary) right up to Easton-on-the-Hill in the north.

Our focus is on helping older people and those with disabilities or additional needs who may find it harder to get out and about. Living in a rural area brings its own challenges — limited public transport and costly taxis can make everyday life more difficult. That’s where we step in, providing support, connection, and practical help to make life a little easier.

At Volunteer Action, we’re here to make life easier and brighter for our members through two key services:

Community Transport Scheme
Our Community Car Scheme helps those without access to their own transport get where they need to go. Whether it’s a trip to the doctor, hospital, or dentist — or simply visiting friends, family, or enjoying a social outing — our volunteer drivers provide a safe, affordable, and reliable way to travel.

Befriending Service & Social Activities
Loneliness can be just as challenging as practical difficulties. That’s why our Befriending Service offers regular companionship to those who feel isolated or find it hard to leave home. Members are thoughtfully matched with a volunteer befriender who keeps in touch by phone or visits in person — offering not just company, but friendship and support.
